2015 'WILHELM' SHIRAZ
Named after Jorg Gartelmann's uncle Wilhelm. Oak maturation for 16 months in new and one to three year old French and American hogsheads and puncheons has delivered a medium bodied, soft wine with notes of vanilla, tobacco, dried spices and a fine tannin structure.
This is a young hidden gem! It is delicious now but has all the hallmarks ofa great ager. Open, decant and review after a few hours... the changes are amazing, indicative of how it will look in 3-5 years.
Cellaring
Drink from 2018, great drinking from 2020 or cellar to 2024.
Food Pairing
Think BBQ lamb, fried haloumi with pesto.. this wine will cope with intensely-flavoured food, meet it and raise it several levels
Region
Hunter Valley (85%) and Mudgee (15%), New South Wales.
Tasting Notes
So much on the nose....cedar, liquorice, cinnamon and sweet smoky berries. In the mouth fine drying tannins support a rich tarriness, and a soft chocolatey velvet mouthfeel. It’s Shiraz origins give the wine a fabulous peppery after-taste.
Vineyard
85% of the fruit came from Denman in the Upper Hunter Valley. The vineyard has red-brown loam clay soil with ironstone which is the requirement for producing the typical food friendly, softer style of Hunter Valley Shiraz. 15% came from Mudgee, part of the 2015 Jesse Shiraz.
