2018 'SARAH ELIZABETH' CHARDONNAY
Named after Jan Gartelmann's daughter Sarah. The single vineyard in Orange east of Cargo has produced a wine with the backbone of the cold climate wines, yet maintaining the fruit richness of warmer regions. Barrel fermented in new and one year old 500 litre puncheons and 300 litre hogsheads to achieve the more subtle oak characters. Kept in oak for ten months with monthly lees stirring. Freshness and vitality was preserved by inhibiting malolactic fermentation.

Think chicken and mushroom pie, crispy skin salmon on mash, soft ripe cheese oozing on pumpernickel, gnocchi with pesto and aioli, and suckling pork.
Orange, New South Wales.
Lower than average rainfalls August to October 2017, and then virtually no rain until harvest meant only vineyards with water supply could produce quality grapes. Temperatures were only slightly above past average.

It’s cool climate origins are exposed by the first draft of the nectarines and lime on the nose, backed up by the spiciness of good French oak barrels. These aromas carry through to a smooth basketful of stone fruit flavours on the palate, zippy acid and a toasty richness to match.
